The Gospel of Thomas

gnosticism gnosticjesusThe Gospel of Thomas, written in Coptic and found in a jar when some farmers were digging for fertilizer, is perhaps the most enlightening text with Jesus’ name on it. Here we find a lot of sayings found in the four Christian gospels, some of them said a little differently, and some truly stunning stuff not found anywhere else. This Gnostic Jesus is more of a mystic, speaking like a true wizard versed in magic. Here are a few excerpts:

(1) And he said, “Whoever finds the interpretation of these sayings will not experience death.”

(2) Jesus said, “Let him who seeks continue seeking until he finds. When he finds, he will become troubled. When he becomes troubled, he will be astonished, and he will rule over the All.”

(3) Jesus said, “If those who lead you say to you, ‘See, the kingdom is in the sky,’ then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, ‘It is in the sea,’ then the fish will precede you. Rather, the kingdom is inside of you, and it is outside of you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will become known, and you will realize that it is you who are the sons of the living father. But if you will not know yourselves, you dwell in poverty and it is you who are that poverty.”

(10) Jesus said, “I have cast fire upon the world, and see, I am guarding it until it blazes.”

(11) Jesus said, “This heaven will pass away, and the one above it will pass away. The dead are not alive, and the living will not die. In the days when you consumed what is dead, you made it what is alive. When you come to dwell in the light, what will you do? On the day when you were one you became two. But when you become two, what will you do?”

(17) Jesus said, “I shall give you what no eye has seen and what no ear has heard and what no hand has touched and what has never occurred to the human mind.”

(18) The disciples said to Jesus, “Tell us how our end will be.”
Jesus said, “Have you discovered, then, the beginning, that you look for the end? For where the beginning is, there will the end be. Blessed is he who will take his place in the beginning; he will know the end and will not experience death.”

(19) Jesus said, “Blessed is he who came into being before he came into being. If you become my disciples and listen to my words, these stones will minister to you. For there are five trees for you in Paradise which remain undisturbed summer and winter and whose leaves do not fall. Whoever becomes acquainted with them will not experience death.”

(20) The disciples said to Jesus, “Tell us what the kingdom of heaven is like.”
He said to them, “It is like a mustard seed. It is the smallest of all seeds. But when it falls on tilled soil, it produces a great plant and becomes a shelter for birds of the sky.”

(36) Jesus said, “Do not be concerned from morning until evening and from evening until morning about what you will wear.”

(37) His disciples said, “When will you become revealed to us and when shall we see you?”
Jesus said, “When you disrobe without being ashamed and take up your garments and place them under your feet like little children and tread on them, then will you see the son of the living one, and you will not be afraid”

(48) Jesus said, “If two make peace with each other in this one house, they will say to the mountain, ‘Move Away,’ and it will move away.”

(70) Jesus said, “That which you have will save you if you bring it forth from yourselves. That which you do not have within you will kill you if you do not have it within you.”

(89) Jesus said, “Why do you wash the outside of the cup? Do you not realize that he who made the inside is the same one who made the outside?”

– from the Gospel of Thomas

The text in its entirety can be found here: http://gnosis.org/naghamm/gthlamb.html

A note of warning, the last verse (114) is considered by most Gnostic scholars to have been added at a later date and is merely a misogynistic re-interpretation of a previous verse.

Morning Meditation

thelema

Good Morning Psychonauts!

Here is a simple and powerful meditation practice. I believe it is Thelemic (Crowleyian) in origin. Begin by reaching a state of emptiness and calm with controlled breathing and whatever mind quieting techniques with which you are familiar. Once Gnosis (trance, theta-wave) is reached, meditate on “How did I get here?” Start from the present and trace your path back as far as it goes. Be prepared, this exercise can lead to some pretty intense realizations; don’t be afraid. By tracing where you came from you will see the direction you are headed.

The Book of the Mother

gw_amongthepeople

Once upon a time, a cult of hippies known as the Shiva Lila took a bunch of Acid and experienced all sorts of things, and most notably they spent a lot of time studying their kids. What they found they put in a book: The Book of the Mother. Here is a link to a free download of the strangest, and in my opinion most useful, parenting guide book man has ever created. It begins, “This is a book about the psychedelic experience and babies.”

Qigong of the Five Elements

Nothing has strengthened my mind/body/spirit connection more than the little bit of Qigong I practice. This is a new one I just started doing today. Remember, Qigong is meant to strengthen and heal you so don’t push yourself too hard.

Community: The Missing Piece

“Why burn poor and lonely under a bowl or under a lampshade
Or on the shelf beside the bed
Where at night you lay turning like a door on its hinges?…
First on your left side, then on your right side… then your left side again.
Why burn poor and lonely?
Tell all the stones we’re gonna make a building…
We’ll be cut into shape and set into place
Or if you’d rather be a window, I’ll gladly be the frame,
Reflecting any kind words, we’ll let in all their blame…
And ruin our reputation all the same.
So never mind our plan making, we’ll start living…
Anyway, aren’t you unbearably sad?
Then why burn so poor and lonely?”

– from “Torches Together” by mewithoutYou

There was a time when humanity lived in harmony with the Earth (and by extension the whole of Creation). Every aspect of our lives (science, art, and religion) were governed and informed by the natural world around us. As the seasons changed our lives changed with them out of necessity. Predators kept us on our toes and taught us that survival meant living within a group of like-minded people. A strong tribe is one where all members play specialized roles, each one fulfilling a specific need, weaving together the skills and gifts of individuals who alone would be far less capable and in extreme situations would not be able to survive. To put it another way, I alone can only do one or two things well (a handful at the most) but together we can do anything.

So what does Community provide? First of all, a Community provides us with a greater purpose. By aligning our goals with a group and contributing our energy to its central ideology we become as one Body, capable of superhuman feats. Our journey through life then becomes a shared quest. Secondly, a Community provides us with a creative environment – a true venue for social evolution. In a creative environment, old problems are faced with new solutions and traditions are free to evolve with new information. Each of us experiences life differently, and in a true Community, our unique perspective is given a voice. This combined experience is new everyday and evolves to fit the needs of the group. And lastly, a Community, by connecting us first to each other, provides us with the much needed link back to the Divine. The perfect role that we discover within our Tribe is a reflection of the Divine Will, the perfect function that we are destined to perform in the Cosmic Dance that ties all of creation together. Learning to live within a group and to serve a function within it teaches us to live in harmony with the whole of the universe. When we are connected once again to the Divine (which is everything!) we become living conduits for Divine Love, for Love truly is that web that connects us.

Let’s look at the American standard for Community: the Modern Family. The standard is a Father (whose job is to be leader, protector, provider, and instructor), a Mother (whose job is to feed, nurture, guide, and heal), and two or three Children that don’t have much of a purpose at all accept to sit and learn. While there are many exceptions to this rule, ie: missing parents, stay at home Dad’s, live-in relatives, and etc, the standard for Community comes down to blood relation. From birth we are locked into a family tied together by blood, not ideology or purpose. This strict obsession with lineage creates a distinct separation from all others, encouraging our egos and discouraging any cross-cultural discourse; yet,  if traced back far enough, all of our blood is the same. Does this Modern Family fill our need for Community? Living under one roof gives the sense that one’s housemates are a part of you. The ties of blood, as well, create a false sense of being one with the Family. But is there a place for you in this Family? Can your Mother or Father provide you with all that you need? A small community like this has limited functionality and no real strength. For even if all members of this Family are capable, there is still so much of the human spectrum that is not accounted for. The strict adherence to gender roles and old/young dichotomy deprive one of the freedom necessary to find your own niche withing the group. Does this Modern Family provide us an environment where social change can flourish? All the ambitious energy of the young, the natural fuel for social evolution, is funneled into industry and labor. The young are told that it is not for them to invent but to listen and learn from those who came before them, and in this way traditions are passed down from generation to generation. These traditions form a formidable barrier, that blocks any new ideas from permeating the culture, effectively stunting any possibility for growth. Spirituality within the Modern Family (if present at all) follows a similar path as tradition, boxing in that Eternal Spark, imprisoning us in a cage of ritualistic hoodoo. This regimented and stagnant version of the Divine’s Message often drives us away from God rather than reconnecting us to Him.

This standard for Community leaves much to be desired. Without a proper Community we can’t expect to learn the lessons necessary to be in harmony with the Divine again. So our world is fraught with disease, pollution, and war and it is our disharmony with Creation that causes this. The cure is simple, to rediscover what we have lost. In relearning how to live together we will heal the damage we have done to ourselves and this planet. If we are to rise up in the name of God and claim this world for the Light again it will be through Community.

In an Interview with Nahko Bear

Here’s a link to a wonderful interview with a true Warrior Prophet, Nahko Bear. The Interviewer himself seems to be a pretty magikal dude as well. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/malcolm-harris/prescription-for-the-soul_b_4002700.html

Here’s an excerpt if you need some convincing:

11) If you could dream or envision anything for Medicine for the People as a movement what would it be?

To be a catalyst for big environmental and social change in all kinds of communities. We’re already seeing that, so I think that’s destiny.

12) If you could give me a three-part prescription for all us living a better and more enlightened life what would it be?

— Take care of yourself (like seriously, in your health, walk in spirit, and in your integrity)

— Take care of your family (which is globally reaching and washing away ego for an equal span)

— Care take the earth (I mean, who do you think your mother is, really?)

If you follow these three, all else will fall into perfect place. Oh yeah, and take your medicine. 🙂

Artist Spotlight: Medicine for the People

Nahko’s enlightening words and the energy and palpable purpose of Medicine for the People combine to create some sort of worship music for the New Age/Magik movement. I was raised on a lot of Contemporary Christian music and its hard to deny that MFTP have a similar vibe. The passion and conviction that is a staple of truly moving worship music are present here but with none of the stale rigidity of their Christian counterparts. It fills my heart with joy to know that fellow Warriors of the Light are carrying the Spirits message to others. We are bonded by that, we Light Workers. Comrades with the same mission.

Afternoon Meditation: Recapitulation

There is no way for our mind/body/spirit to process the whole of our experience as we are experiencing it. Our world-view and temperament drive us to latch on to only a few details of this input, stringing the together into the Storyline or melodrama of our lives. And yet, all things we experience are lessons given by the Spirit and are indeed stored in our memory.

Recapitulation is the process in which a wizard reviews his past experiences by reliving them in a “state of un-ordinary awareness” as Castaneda called it. In this reliving of our lives we are able to process the entirety what the Spirit is teaching us. All the gaps in our understanding are filled and misconceptions formed by our one-sightedness are brought into the light. Our lives are leading somewhere and through recapitulation we finally are able to see the whole scope of our destiny: our Divine Path.

“To know where you have come from is to know where you are going.”
– Jesus of Barcelona

[A tip for the more experienced Psychonaut: Triptamenes (most commonly LSD, DMT, and Psilocybin) are a wonderful aid when it comes to recapitulation. In traditional paganism they have always been used to clear the cob webs, to let the user see there past without attatchment, to find that Thread which is the path. Be safe and be brave.
